Not updated you all in a while but here we go with another update. I was looking through my iTunes yesterday and I released that Def Jam Records has spawned some of the greatest Hip Hop artists of all time, not to mention in the present day some of the best R n B singers and songwriters.
Def Jam Records was founded by Rick Rubin in his dorm whilst he was at New York University and the first release was a single by his punk-rock group Hose. Shortly after Jazzy Jay introduced Rubin to Russell Simmons and joined forces so to speak. The first single released with a Def Jam Recordings logo was T La Rock & Jazzy Jay "It's Yours". The first releases with a Def Jam Recordings catalogue number were LL Cool J's "I Need a Beat", and the Beastie Boys', "Rock Hard", both in 1984. The singles sold well, eventually leading to a distribution deal with CBS Records. As the decade drew to a close, the label signed Public Enemy, whose controversial lyrical content garnered the company both critical acclaim and disdain.
Lyor Cohen became president of Def Jam in 1988, after winning a power struggle with Rubin, who would shortly thereafter leave the company to form Def American Recordings (now known as American Recordings).
Simply put Def Jam are, were and will always be the record label to beat they are the record label that have sold the most records, they are the record label that have produced some of the best talent in music they will always be the bench mark that other labels will look to and try to be like. Such artists like Public Enemy, LL Cool J, Slick Rick, Warren G, Ludacris, Scarface, Rick Ross, Ne-Yo, Rihanna, Jay Z, Ashanti, Mariah Carey, The Killers, Lionel Richie, Kanye West, Amerie, Fabolous and many many more have all been part or are still a part of the great label that is Def Jam.
Simply put all you can do is sit down and respect Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons for what they accomplished with hard work and an eye for talent.
